The Path Darwin Built to Think
Charles Darwin didn’t do his best thinking at his desk. He did it on a loop of sandy gravel behind his house, walking the same third-of-a-mile circuit, day after day, for over twenty years. He called it the Sandwalk. It ran along the edge of Down House, his home in the Kent countryside, through a narrow strip of woodland he’d planted himself — hazel, birch, dogwood, holly — screening the path from the neighboring farmland so that once he was inside it, the outside world simply disappeared. This wasn’t landscaping for its own sake. Darwin built the path because he needed it. Sitting still with a hard problem didn’t work for him. Walking did. Most days followed the same shape: a couple of hours at his desk in the early morning, then out to the Sandwalk mid-morning, dog at his side. He wasn’t strolling to clear his head before returning to work — the walk was the work. Whatever he’d been circling on paper, he’d carry out onto the path and turn over step by step, the rhythm of walking doing something that sitting couldn’t. He was particular about the loop, almost ritualistic. At the start of each circuit he’d kick aside one flint from a small pile he kept there, so he could track how many times he’d gone around without ever having to hold a number in his head — a strange, small system, but a telling one. It meant his conscious attention was never spent on counting. It was free to stay on the actual problem: a puzzle in barnacle anatomy, an objection to work through, the slow architecture of an argument he wasn’t ready to put into words yet. This is where it gets interesting, biographically. The species question — the idea that would become On the Origin of Species — didn’t arrive in a single moment of insight at his writing desk. It was worked out incrementally, over roughly two decades, much of that on this same repetitive loop. Contemporaries and biographers describe him almost pacing through his own arguments the way another person might pace a room while rehearsing a speech. The Sandwalk was where the theory got tested against itself, long before it went anywhere near a manuscript. There’s something worth sitting with here: the walk wasn’t a reward for good thinking, or a break from it. It was a tool, deliberately built and repeated, because Darwin seems to have understood something about his own mind — that low-stimulus, physically automatic movement freed up the mental bandwidth that sitting still couldn’t. Nothing to navigate, no new sights to process, no decisions to make. Just the same path, the same trees, the same flints — and underneath all that repetition, room for a hard idea to keep turning. He’s not the only one who found this. Wordsworth composed while walking. Nietzsche claimed only thoughts reached while walking had any value. Kant famously walked the same route through Königsberg at the same hour every day. But Darwin’s case is unusually well documented, and unusually literal — he didn’t just enjoy walking, he engineered a specific loop into the landscape of his own home, purpose-built for thought. The path still exists today, and you can still walk it. It’s a small, quiet detail in the life of someone who fundamentally changed how we understand the natural world — but maybe not an incidental one. Twenty years of walking the same third of a mile, one flint at a time, might be as much a part of how On the Origin of Species got written as anything that happened at his desk. Missed Monday and got back to the gym yesterday and got in today to be back on schedule - modified my gym regimen to begin reducing reps and shifting to overload to push and then increasing set count for weights, in the over the past 2 weeks I have been comfortably increasing weights by 50-80lbs over the starting weights as I get used to it - I also managed to really hone in the breathing as well which allowed me to keep heart rate down for the duration of the exercise, it also shortened training time by nearly half and less sometimes and then allows me to still get some cardio in with time to spare, I also begin to modify my treadmill workout to include inclines which have dramatically increased my energy consumption more steadily overall enhancing the heavy yet relaxed workout. Finding now if I dial back the weights by even 10lbs I can really see the difference the overload training has been doing for me. Over a month in and biggest difference I can report back from the full body regimen, is arms are way more toned, night and day muscle definition on my shoulders which were the weakest link, and noticeably shaving fat from under my pex's and a slightly slimmer physique. Lets keep pushing. (at Anytime fitness) (health, status update)
Woo! Managed to get back to the gym today to resume full-body workouts. I was skeptical given my back was still a bit tweaked, but the determination to get back on track carried me through the week since Monday and I even closed every single ring so far this week. Starting Monday, I made it a point to do some basic resistance training and lots of stretching, then pushed through an hour each day of pure walking at the gym starting Tuesday. Up until last night, I was still struggling to roll over in bed. This morning I got in on time at the gym and went all out — held back on some weights for good measure, but for the ones I didn't think would strain my back, I took a chance and went straight to regular training weights. Despite the pain, I still managed to close those rings and then some, and I'm genuinely enjoying the process of leading an active lifestyle. Can't wait to be back on the Apollo this weekend! To top it all off, I stayed focused on making quality home-cooked meals all week, and even squeezed in a hot tub soak midweek — which may have been the secret recovery weapon. All in all, lesson learned: gotta protect the back at all costs. (at Anytime Fitness) (health, status update)
6th attempt at the gym did some quality full body workouts again about an hrs worth, about 6km of total walking in, did something crazy and scooted from home to Streetsville a 22km adventure for the heck of it and did it within 68 mins too pretty good, saw tons of great bike lanes and paths took a gravel path for one quarter the trip through wooded area was totally amazing view - all this while stupidly carrying my full work load with me about 40lbs+ and while I got it done I ended up tweaking my back badly - don’t advise carrying weights while riding it’s not great at all for you - lesson learned (at Mississauga after work) (health, rip, status update)
Attempt 5 - Was supposed to be a light day but ended up doing a full leg and upper today at the gym , feeling great, slightly winded but manageable. Super happy I’m sticking to it - let’s keep it going. Also experimenting with making Osakan Dark Phonk Music that carried me through my session - I’ll publish some later this week! 4th gym attendance today - made it an upper day and I was happy I managed to find a rhythm that is repeatable - getting more confident with the routine - making some progress to getting my breathing under control and while I'm at it getting my form perfected. So far though not sure if this was recommended, but I try to keep all the weights consistent across all thematic workouts so this way I'm building a baseline across all the particular muscle training segments. Currently working 40lbs across the board, hoping to graduate more sooner. For now getting those reps in. Lets go looking forward to the next check in! (at Anytime Fitness) (health)
3rd attempt at the gym - made it a leg day today so I can get some thumb time in with coding while working out, began catologing equipment at the gym, built out an interactive dash app with all the equipment and will be integrating into work out tracker with an AI assisted regimen with tracking telemetry built in - feel great, will be back again Wednesday to work on upper body. (at Anytime Fitness) (health, ai)
Second time at the gym this morning focused more on feeling comfortable, learning and understanding the equipment, form and breathing then sets and reps - I think learning how to be consistent properly is more important then pushing at my current experience level what I’d be pushing consistently and not proper - good news is I feel heckin better and not winded and no puking this time around so I’d take all the wins I can get, looking forward to another session tomorrow (at Anytime fitness) (health)
First day at the gym doing weight training had me puking at the end lol - never done strength training always been a cardio guy - definitely need to work on form and get my breathing in correctly, also note to myself - beware the shoulder press next time 🫠 (at Anytime Fitness) (health)

Locked it in, secured a gym membership again. I intend to be unrecognizable in the next 6 months (at Anytime Fitness) (health)
